No-drill blinds: will they fit your window?

Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings makes no-drill blinds to your window size. Before you choose a colour, check the frame. A no-drill blind needs at least 40mm of depth on the inside face of the window frame, an opening up to 2m wide, and sides that are firm and square. If you have those three, it fits, and it goes in and comes out without a single hole.

The four checks, about a minute

  1. Open the window and look at the frame. You are looking for the reveal: the flat inside face of the frame, between the glass and the front edge of the opening.
  2. Measure how deep that face is, front to back. You need at least 40mm. Most standard South African aluminium and wooden frames have it. Depth on its own is not the whole answer — the width and the state of the frame still have to pass.
  3. Measure the width of the opening. Up to 2m and you are inside the no-drill range. Wider than that is outside what we supply with a no-drill mount, and the blind is made with a standard bracket instead.
  4. Press the sides of the frame. They need to be firm and square. A tension mount works by pushing outwards against them, so a flimsy or badly out-of-square recess is the one to ask us about before ordering.

What actually holds a no-drill blind up

What we supply
Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings supplies a mechanical tension mount. The bracket presses firmly against the inside of the window frame and grips there. Nothing is stuck on, nothing is screwed in, and it comes off cleanly with no marks left behind.
What holds the blind up
The frame does. The pressure of the bracket against two firm, square sides is what carries the weight, which is why the 40mm depth and the 2m width limit are the two numbers to check.
What you actually get
The blind is identical to our standard drilled version: same mechanism, same fabric, same roller. Only the mounting differs. No-drill is available on all indoor roller blinds and on 25mm aluminium and 25mm aluwood venetians. It cannot be combined with a motor.

Questions people ask before ordering

What are the best blinds for a rental if I cannot drill?

A tension-mounted no-drill roller blind, in blockout if you want the room dark or sheer if you want daylight without the neighbours. Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings has been fitting blinds since 2010, much of it on the Garden Route coast, and the blind we supply on a no-drill bracket is the same mechanism, fabric and roller as our drilled version — the mounting is the only thing that differs, so it is not a lighter-duty product. It goes into the frame with no holes and no fixings, it comes out the same way, and it leaves with you. The one thing to check first is the frame: 40mm of depth and a firm, square recess.

How do I know if my window will take one?

Measure the flat inside face of the frame, front to back. You need 40mm or more. Then measure the width of the opening: up to 2m works. If you have both, you can order.

Are no-drill blind brackets stick-on?

No. Ours are mechanical tension mounts that press against the inside of the frame. Nothing is glued to your window.

Do I need my landlord’s permission?

Check your lease, because that is between you and your landlord. What we can tell you is what happens to the wall: nothing. No holes, no screws, no permanent fixings, and nothing altered when the blind comes down.

Can I take no-drill blinds with me when I move?

Yes, and that is most of the point. They lift out of the frame. Whether they fit the next place depends on that window, so keep your measurements.

What if my window is wider than 2m or has no reveal?

Then a standard bracket fixed above the opening is the one to use. Tell us the window on WhatsApp and we will say which way to go rather than sell you the one that will not hold.

What deduction do you apply on a no-drill blind?

The same standard 10mm we take off every inside (recess) mount, with no extra allowance. You enter the opening size; we handle the deduction.
